Virtual Private Network VPN technology
provides users in remote locations the ability
to securely access UPMC Health System
network resources via the Internet.  A
VPN utilizes encryption technology to encode all data transferred between the remote computer and the UPMC Health System network.  Additionally, a strong authentication mechanism is incorporated to ensure that the user has the appropriate access rights to permit connection to the Health System network and its resources.  Through use of this technology, confidentiality of all types of information can be insured regardless of the fact that a public infrastructure (the Internet) is being used to transmit the data.

To make use of VPN technology a user must first be connected to the Internet through a local Internet Service Provider (ISP), such as Stargate, the preferred provider of UPMC Health System.

Various connection types are supported including DSL, cable modem, or analog (dialup) phone line.  The maximum benefit of VPN technology is realized when higher speed connections like DSL or cable modem are used.  These types of connections generally run at speeds higher than 128kbps.  Response time for analog connections will be restricted to the maximum speed of the connection, currently limited to 56kbps.

After establishing a connection to the Internet using one of the technologies described above, the user then launches a software program called the VPN client.  At this point all users must then authenticate using a password provided by a small device called an RSA token (fob) as well as a username and password from valid user account on the UPMC NT domain.  Once successfully authenticated the users' computer responds as if it was connected directly to the UPMC Health System network.

To obtain authorization for VPN access, affiliates must register internally with UPMC.

There are currently two options available for remote access using VPN technology from Stargate (read our Frequently Asked Questions for more information):

      • Internet With VPN Service {best value *}
Affiliates enjoy a great discount on Stargate dial-up and broadband services in addition to access to the UPMC Health System network through the VPN (included in price).  You must also register internally with UPMC for authorization.

      • VPN Only Service
Affiliates using an ISP other than Stargate are eligible to use the
VPN for an additional internal monthly fee.  Please read more information here.

If you don't need
VPN access, but would still like to take advantage of the exclusive discount available to UPMC employees, please select:

      • Internet Only Service
Affiliates enjoy a great discount on Stargate
dial-up and broadband services just for being a UPMC employee.  VPN access not included.

* The best value product is the Internet With VPN Service.  Stargate offers a discount on the monthly Internet service rate for dial-up and broadband services.  In addition, the external VPN access is included in this discounted price.  UPMC charges your cost center  for the RSA token and the VPN infrastructure. VPN Only customers are responsible for additional charges.
